Stress Tips...by
G. Gaynor McTigueDon't eat it if you don't want it. The
restaurant serves oversized portions. You take more food than you can eat. You
don't want to disappoint your host. You don't like leaving leftovers. You feel
guilty throwing food away. Whatever the reason, you often end up eating more food
than you want...or need. This stresses your system, adds unwanted calories and
leaves you bloated and full. Don't always feel you have to finish it. In fact,
leave the table a little hungry. Overeating leads to many problems. Why make yourself
crazy? Eat slowly. A meal is a gift,
a source of pleasure, a time to relax and replenish. So why diminish the experience
by scarfing it down like it may be your last? This may take some doing, but get
into the habit of eating slowly. Chew deliberately and savor each bite. Take frequent
pauses. Give your body a chance to accept and digest the food, rather than shock
and overwhelm it. And try not to think about finishing fast so you can get to
something else. This is what you want to be doing. So give each repast
the enjoyment and sociality it deserves. Why make yourself crazy? Read ingredient and nutrition labels. Just
because it's a brand name, comes in glitzy packaging, and people gush over it
in commercials doesn't make it wholesome or nutritious. Thankfully, laws require
companies to come clean and list ingredients and nutrition information on their
products. Don't ignore it. It's far more revealing than their advertising. Find
out how much sugar they're laying on you and your family. (The amounts contained
in many foods and beverages will floor you.) Note the number of calories -- and
grams of protein, fat and carbohydrates -- you're consuming. And if you have to
be a chemistry major to understand a label, maybe you should pass on it altogether.
Get serious about what you're putting into your body. Why make yourself crazy?
