Today's
Stress Tip..by
G. Gaynor McTigue..THU.6/30/05 Slow your perception of time. A
recent study suggests there are physiological reasons why time appears to pass
more quickly for adults than it does for children. Which may explain why the year
that seems like a week to an older person is an eternity to a younger one. Still,
there are ways you can slow your perception of how fast time is moving (if not
the passage of time itself). One is to be in the moment, to focus solely on the
activity you're engaged in -- without rushing or giving in to distraction. Another
is to do what made time seem so boundless to us as kids: take as much of it as
you need to explore, observe and savor what interests you most...naturally...
without being tied to a schedule. Do that, and maybe the rest of your life won't
seem like a mad dash to the finish line. Why make yourself crazy? Make StressHoliday.com your home page and be greeted each weekday morning with a new stress-reducing strategy! Based
on G. Gaynor McTigue's acclaimed book Why Make Yourself Crazy? featured
in major publications and on talk shows across America.
Previous Stress Tip Don't mistake vacation for life. You're on vacation. You're in the most pleasant setting. Having the most wonderful time. Everyone is cheerful, friendly, kind. The food is great. Stress is nonexistent. You say to yourself, "I can get used to this." And you think this is the way life should be all the time. And agonize over the improbability of ever achieving that kind of "freedom" and independence. Hold on. It may seem like nirvana now in contrast to your regular doings. But (hard to believe) you'd soon grow sick of it. The point is, you don't have to go to the opposite extreme to live an enriching, stress-free life. Just a modest move toward the middle can have an enormously positive effect. Remember, you still need the good stress: challenges, goals, purpose. It's the constant bad stress that's the culprit. So enjoy your vacation for what it is. A revitalizing temporary break. Why make yourself crazy?
